Starting a New Organization
New organizations can be started by as few as two students! All applications for new student groups are submitted using the Involvement Network and students must be prepared to submit names of interested members, a mission statement, and a potential advisor. To review the full text of the policy, please visit the link in the Student Handbook for the policy on recognition of student organizations.
To submit an application, please visit the Involvement Network and follow the news links to register your group.
Before pursuing the task of starting a new organization, there are some items to keep in mind:
- All groups start by achieving provisional recognition. Provisional recognition carries requirements for training and development before full recognition is possible.
- There are closing dates for each semester when OSIL stops accepting applications from new groups. This is done to ensure that existing groups have time and support to accomplish provisional requirements.
- It is the student leaders' responsibility to assure that tasks are being met during the provisional period. Advisors are not able to serve as primary contacts for student organizations and the full array of membership and leadership responsibility rests with the students.
- All groups are given the maximum of a semester to achieve full recognition.
- Funding from SGA is not possible until a group has achieved full recognition from the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership.
- Provisional student organizations have limited event privileges and are only able to host business meetings, reserve tables, and serve as a co-sponsor for events.
